I’d go back in time and find some way to save my people. I don’t know what I’d choose. Maybe I’d find a way to stop the Reform Party from ever coming to power. Maybe I’d go tell the last Sky Ranger to get everyone off the planet when he has the chance. Maybe I’d find my old self and tell him to stop being such an idiot.
I don’t know a lot that can be done in the here and now. I’ve been doing everything I can to fight the Reformists for three years, and it hasn’t made much of a difference at all!
You know, I never used to be scared of things. Now, though? I feel like I’m worried and afraid all the time. This trip worries me. Hiding out in this bar worries me. I’m afraid of what will happen if they catch me, and what will happen if they don’t.
I’m not sure why I’m so afraid, since the worst has already happened. I must be getting old.
Good question! Jackie tells me that the ship is heading for Reilis, which is just over the border the Confederation shares with the Rätons. It’s sort of, um, that way, and it’s…
You know what, it’s probably easier just to show you:
The Confederation is huge, and I mean huge. I don’t get the sheer scale of it sometimes. You can see Earth there near the middle, and Calvasna, which is where the government is now. We’re headed in the opposite direction. I made sure to ask the map generator to include Reilis, which is over the Räton border in green.
It’s a very long way.
The hyperdrive on Jackie’s ship is surprisingly good, she says, for such a bucket of bolts, so it’ll probably take under three months to get there.
The exact course we’re taking is a secret, since we don’t want any Confederation Fleet ships finding and catching us. Once we get there, I’m told Reilis has a big human expatriate population. I wonder what it’ll be like?
Thanks for your questions!
Okay, let me see if I can… Yeah. I do. But I have no idea how likely that is! Things haven’t been going all that well for me lately!
I’m typing this from a bar in Halifax; I’m surrounded by all these really shifty-looking people, and they’re all giving me looks. In a little while we’ll be getting on a ship and leaving Earth. Jackie, she’s the woman who owns the ship, says that I was lucky to get a berth on it. If everything goes as planned, we’ll be leaving the Confederation for good.
I’ve actually been sitting here thinking about Sil. It’s been a long couple of years since I saw her last, and I think about her all the time. I wonder if she’ll have any way of finding out what happened to me? I wonder how I’ll be able to find her?
Maybe someday if things get better I’ll be able to come back, and then I can go looking for her. I’d love to do that.
Someday, right? Heh.
Hi everyone! Sky Ranger here. I’ll answer any questions you have about me, my friends, the people I’ve known and met, the general state of the Confederation, and whatever else you’d like to know.
So hit that ask button over on the right.
Oh, I’m told that we’re going to give away an Advance Reader Copy of my latest adventures, Fly Into Fire, to one lucky questioner. So I’m turning anonymous asks off for now!
